Truman's Big Decision

It is May 11th 1945,

one month ago you were Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Vice President, but now it has all changed.  Since FDR's death on April 12th you have had to learn a lot of information and a lot of new responsibilities.

V-E Day

A few days ago, on May 7th, the War in Europe ended with Germany’s surrender.  While you and the rest of the American people are thrilled, you remember almost 184,000 American Soldiers have died in Europe…

To make things worse the war in the Pacific is still going on and the Japanese home island standing strong.




The War in the Pacific

Fighting the Japanese has been extremely difficult.  The U.S. military has had to “jump” from island to island requiring lots of beach invasions which always result in heavy casualties. 

Over 100,000 have died so far in the Pacific, and some have said an invasion of Japan would cost another 100,000 lives…


The Manhattan Project

However, since becoming President you have been given more information about the “Manhattan Project” Roosevelt had been working on.


Your Task

You are to evaluate the documents being handed to you and come to a decision about whether or not you will use this new weapon.
